The food we ordered separately was good, but breakfast was a basic, unimpressive spread. The room itself was nice, with an old British style, while the management and staff support were poor. If you don't know Matheran, there's no guidance at all: no calls, follow-ups, or communication if you're delayed or get stuck. Nobody checks whether you've returned, even when you come back late from viewpoints. It doesn't suit elderly guests, since there's no room service and rooms are on uneven levels. Staff only respond if you go to them in person. There's no network or Wi-Fi, which I understand, but it makes emergencies difficult. Maintenance is below average, there aren't any activities, and the few board games are limited and poorly kept.

The staff were very helpful and available around the clock, and we had a great stay. From Charlotte Lake, it's about 0.6 km away, with Lord Point and a few viewpoints around 1 km away. We came by toy train from Neral, then walked roughly 25-30 minutes from Matheran railway station without luggage. Another option is a cab from Neral station for 100 rupees per person. It drops you near Aman lodge, while Matheran railway station is 2.5 km uphill from there. You can go up by e-rickshaw or horse.

For a hotel described as four-star, I'd expect pickup and drop-off from the parking lot. The staff weren't courteous, and the room rate felt too high for what was provided. It's a nice heritage property, but it hasn't been maintained well and is missing basic bathroom items like a hair dryer and body lotion.

The place feels calm and tucked into greenery, with birdsong and wind adding to the peaceful atmosphere. Rateesh and Rekha were wonderful hosts and very hospitable.

The food was a real highlight, especially the desserts my 10-year-old loved. My family and I visited Dune Barr for a holiday, and the old British-era feel was just like the pictures I'd seen. It was peaceful, a nice place to unwind, reconnect with nature, and feel refreshed. If you're after good food and a soothing atmosphere, I'd suggest it.
