Ooty - Fern Hill, A Sterling Holidays Resort

We spent five days at Sterling Fern Hill over Christmas 2025, and the stay was memorable for all the wrong reasons. We'd paid in full and couldn't cancel, so we put up with what felt like a misleading experience. For a “5-star” hotel, the place was all hype and little luxury. The drive was slow and uncomfortable because the road was narrow and full of unannounced roadworks. We took the long route whenever we travelled to and from the hotel. Our Superior Room with Balcony was filthy with dust around the windows, corners, and furniture, and it made us sneeze. The balcony was decorated with pigeon droppings. The bathroom was grimy and the floor was dirty. The mattress was so hard it could have been a plank, and the room felt more like a budget lodge than a luxury hotel. There were no loofahs, cotton buds, or bathrobe. Getting simple room service requests took several calls, and the staff weren't very warm or helpful. At checkout, the front desk manager and housekeeping manager politely pressed us to leave a 5-star review after we'd paid full price. That was a novelty after experiencing 3-star standards in a supposed 5-star hotel. The food was average and the buffet was the same every day. If you're expecting a genuine 5-star stay, look elsewhere.

I've worked in travel for a long time and regularly recommend hotels to clients, but after this stay I'd hesitate to suggest this property unless it makes major improvements. The breakfast was a letdown: poor quality and taste, few choices, and little freshness. It wasn't worth the price, so we ate outside instead. The tea was the only acceptable item. The room hadn't been cleaned properly when we checked in. There was visible dust around the windows, corners, and furniture. Slippers were also missing at first, and even after several requests they arrived very late. Guests shouldn't have to repeatedly chase basic amenities that are supposed to be provided as standard. The staff weren't proactive or helpful in explaining the hotel's services and facilities. Communication and support were lacking, which made the stay inconvenient. I expected a comfortable, well managed visit, but the service fell far short. Cleanliness is a basic hotel requirement, and that negligence was disappointing. Overall it wasn't a satisfactory stay or good value for money. I hope management takes the feedback seriously and improves cleanliness, service, and food.

The stay ended on a lovely note, thanks to how warmly the front office team welcomed my wife and me. Mr Iyyappan arranged an early check-in and a complimentary room upgrade for us as senior citizens. We enjoyed the room, food, staff, and cheerful atmosphere. Mr.Ashil made a great impression with his mocktails, and Miss Veena patiently listened to my concerns about the booking and said she would look into them. Getting there had been stressful. We booked through BOOKING. COM on the evening of 19/02/26 for the night of 20/02/26, and received confirmation and the property's contact details. When I called Sterling Ooty around 2030 hrs, the person who answered was cold and unhelpful, wouldn't confirm the Booking. Com reservation, and said he could ONLY help with a DIRECT booking. I contacted Booking. com for assistance. At about 0630 hrs the next morning, I called again and Mr Aromal at the front desk, if I have his name right, was helpful and confirmed it. That was a big relief before setting off. After that first call I arrived with low expectations, so the welcome and the happy, satisfying stay were a real surprise.

The calm setting was a highlight, with lovely greenery all around the property. Our room was clean and looked after, and the staff were polite and helpful. The food was good and suited kids too. We had a wonderful family stay at Sterling Fern Hill, Ooty, and would happily visit again.
