Open View Estate Ranikhet is a good choice if you want to feel immersed in nature in a secluded setting. It has two large furnished rooms with attached bathrooms, plus a dining hall where the family can eat together.

The balcony has lovely views of the town in one direction and the lesser Himalayas in the other. The cottage is also well placed, away from the busy town but close enough to reach basic conveniences. Our host and the staff were very friendly and ready to help with requests, from celebration arrangements to local food. A great fit for families, and we’re looking forward to coming back with ours.

The only bright spot was caretaker Mr Gopal, who was overloaded with work but still tried to look after guests. The cottage isn’t suitable for business executives, and at a tariff of 5400, it doesn’t feel worth the price. Basic things like slippers weren’t provided, and the quilts weren’t warm enough for Ranikhet winters. I tried sleeping in my jacket. It took over an hour for the geyser to heat half a bucket of water, and the commode flush didn’t work properly, so we had to use a bucket. If you charge three star rates, please provide basic amenities.

The caretaker was welcoming, looked after me well, cooked great food, and was always smiling. The cottage itself is pretty, with a lovely view and a location that’s close to town but still set apart. But the property needs a thorough clean and airing. The sheets, towels, floor, and furnishings all need replacing, and the duvet cover was dirty and itchy. I was glad I brought my own towels, though I had to use the sheets. It was a good experience overall, and I’d recommend it if you bring your own linen.

Gopal ji made fantastic food that felt just like home while on vacation. The cottage is spacious and luxurious, and it’s in one of the best locations in Ranikhet. I’d recommend it if you’re visiting.
