The gardens and private pool made the Gate House feel wonderfully secluded, and most of the week we had the place to ourselves. Inside, it was spacious and filled with an eclectic collection of Indian antiques. A gate keeper and ayah kept us company, and we took the short walk to the Bungalow for meals. We spent a week there in 2016 and couldn’t have asked for a more charming stay. The pool was a lovely contrast to the one at the Bungalow on the Beach.

Gate House feels like an old South Village home, with the atmosphere of a heritage house and upkeep that seemed very good. There’s a garden and swimming pool, and the rooms were well maintained. The staff were genuinely courteous and ready to help however they could.

The stay had a lot going for it, but a few safety and upkeep issues stood out. The bed was reached by steps that didn’t match its length, which felt dangerous, especially with children around. A large colony of black ants had taken over one of the wooden entrances and got onto my toddlers, scaring them. One faucet also wasn’t working properly.

I liked the room and the service, and the rest of the place was enjoyable too. Getting breakfast meant walking 400m, which was a nuisance. The Wi-Fi also wasn’t good.

The restoration is beautiful, though maintenance seems lacking. I’d go sooner rather than later, before the place starts looking shabby.
