Selfoss Hotel

The rooms may be fine, but on the Saturday night we stayed, the place felt like a huge nightclub. Very loud music from the club carried up to the fourth floor, while people were partying in the hallways with more music, drinking, and smoking. When we told reception, they just said, “it’s Saturday,” and showed no intention of doing anything. We booked a hotel, not a nightclub in Ibiza. If you care about getting some peace and quiet, I strongly advise against staying here. It may have been the worst hotel of our whole Iceland trip.

We liked this place so much that we stayed here at both the start and the end of our Iceland ring road trip. The staff were polite and accommodating, and check in went smoothly. The rooms were clean and quiet. There are plenty of places to eat and drink within walking distance in downtown Selfoss. The breakfast buffet alone is worth staying for. This was my favorite hotel on the trip, and I’ll definitely be back.

It felt more like an office building than a hotel, and we were extremely disappointed. Our room was very basic, with just two stools and no bedside table. The entrance to rooms numbered above 500 had a large door on the first floor that anyone could enter. Its glass was cracked, which felt very unsafe, and there was no security to stop people walking in.

I wouldn’t say this meets a three star standard. After being assigned a room numbered 5xx, it felt like staying in an office building. The room seemed converted from an office, and the ceiling above could be opened to the upper floor. In the bathroom, hand sanitizer, shower gel, and shampoo were all combined in one product. That’s supposed to cover washing hands, showering, and shampooing, which doesn’t feel right for a three star hotel. There was also a very small sink, and two stools were being used as bedside tables. The large entrance door had cracked glass and no one watching it, so anyone could come and go. Our room door didn’t seem secure either. There were signs it had been pried open, and we had to use coat hangers to keep it shut in case someone opened it at night. To me, this is a 1-2 star hotel and not worth the price, unless you stay in one of their better rooms.
