South Coast Hotel

The rooms are comfortable and the hotel is new, but the showers were a bit cold and the water pressure was low. Breakfast was really disappointing: burnt, cold scrambled eggs and cold, mushy mushrooms. Rooms at the front are noisy because of the road. I don’t recommend it.

After a long drive from Hofn, we hoped to relax in the Spa hot tub, but trying it was a big mistake, despite the rooms and location being nice. We paid for access and found still water that looked heavily used. There was no circulation, and the cold tub wasn’t even filled. The sauna was fine, but the rest didn’t look maintained by hotel staff. We complained at reception, but they dismissed us instead of checking into it. When we asked about upkeep, they gave the generic answer that it was “maintained.” Asked why the hot tub water was still, they said, “it’s not a Jacuzzi,” even though the water looked disgusting. About the empty cold tub, they just said, “it should be filled.” No apology, and no attempt to inspect the facility. We walked away because reception clearly didn’t care. It really soured our mood after the drive from Hofn. Extremely disappointing.

We were there for three nights, and our key cards stopped working every day. It seems most guests only stay one night. The modern hotel rooms were very clean and well equipped, though a bit warm in early September, which might be more of a problem in high summer. Breakfast buffet starts at 7:00 and was very good. There are lots of restaurants in the city center, just two minutes away for dinner.

The staff were friendly and helpful, and our room was clean and quiet. We visited in October and appreciated the towel warmer in the bathroom. I couldn’t work out how to use the TV, so that’s the only reason I’ve taken off a star. Turns out I didn’t really need it anyway!
