A lovely base for visiting the little towns nearby.

The castle is Torre Alfina’s main draw, and it’s open to visitors on Saturdays and Sundays, but only at limited times. It’s privately owned, so check the hours. The village has only about 300 residents and is considered one of Italy’s most beautiful villages. The castle’s history makes it well worth seeing.

Torre Alfina brings together history, nature, art, and local tradition in a place that feels almost untouched by time. It’s a small medieval village on a tuff plateau, 602 meters above sea level, near the borders of Lazio, Umbria, and Tuscany. The hamlet belongs to the municipality of Acquapendente in the province of Viterbo and is part of the “The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy” club. At the center stands the castle, with its crenellated towers above the stone houses. Its roots go back to the Lombard era, and the Monaldeschi family shaped its story in the 14th century. The Neo-Gothic look that gives it a fairytale feel came from a major renovation in the early 20th century. These days it hosts events, ceremonies, and guided visits through rooms full of history and mystery. The Bosco del Sasseto lies below the village. National Geographic has called it the “Fairytale Forest” and “Snow White’s Forest.” Paths wind among old trees with twisted trunks and mossy boulders, giving the woods a timeless, magical feel. The forest also contains the Neo-Gothic mausoleum of Marquis Edoardo Cahen, who played a key role in transforming both the castle and woods in the late 19th century. The Monte Rufeno Nature Reserve is also close by. This protected area covers about 3,000 hectares and has trails for walking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. There’s a Museo del Fiore inside the reserve, an educational center focused on local biodiversity.

The village is lovely, though the castle was closed when I went. Check its opening days before making the trip.

Mr. Franco kindly let us in on a day with no tours scheduled. We only got to see the garden and inner courtyard, but that was enough to make us want to come back and see more.
