Mirtillo Alpino

A nice little mountain town to stop by while hiking.

The rooms are all spacious and clean, with comfortable, modern bathrooms. The spa is really nice, too, with several saunas, a Turkish bath, a whirlpool, and a pool with an outdoor section in the adults-only area. Families also have their own pool area with a smaller pool and a slide. There's lots of room for children, so I wouldn't recommend it for couples. The restaurant is decent and has a range of options.

We were lucky enough to get snow on Christmas Eve, and luckier still with the staff. Fabio was attentive, kind, and hospitable, and deserves a 10 out of 10 for both his work and his character. I stayed at Mirtillo Alpino in the Vogna Valley, surrounded by green Alpine forest. Built in authentic Walser style, it's a place of quiet and calm, with only the gentle sound of cowbells from grazing cows. It felt like stepping into another era. That isolation might surprise or even frighten you if you're not ready to embrace it. I traveled with my dog, and was delighted to find a dog bed and two bowls already in the room. Other places haven't always offered that, so I really appreciated the care shown to guests with pets. Breakfast is Italian style, though you can drive a few minutes to Mirtillo Rosso for an international option. The young man serving breakfast was exceptionally courteous, attentive to detail, polite, and friendly. The croissants were the best I've ever had, and the yogurt and other local products tasted extraordinary. Several trails start right at the property and lead to refuges, lakes, and streams. A short drive gets you to nearby Alagna Valsesia, where you can head up toward the Monte Rosa massif and explore trails and glaciers. I've had few holidays as beautiful as this one. The complex has three separate buildings: the elegant, modern Mirtillo Rosso, which still feels warm and welcoming, Mirtilli Blu just outside Alagna, which I didn't visit, and Mirtillo Alpino, where I stayed. This is highly recommended if you want to immerse yourself in the nature, silence, and peace of the Pennine Alps.
