The breakfast included in the price was the biggest letdown. I’ve never had such a poor-tasting breakfast, even at the worst hotel. The focaccia was dry leftovers, the scrambled eggs were so hard they needed a knife, and the bacon was raw and only warmed a little. There was just one kind of cold cut and cheese. Whoever planned it may not know what a hotel breakfast should be. Even coffee with a croissant would have been less embarrassing. The Trullo itself was a surprise from my wife, and a successful one. Staying there felt like being sent back a few hundred years, before we could take a refreshing shower. The hot weather had heated it up, though, and the air conditioning couldn’t keep up, so falling asleep was difficult. The church bells every 15 minutes should be banned. The gentlemen and lady at reception were very nice, and despite that awful breakfast, the experience left me with a 5-star impression 😂

After checking in at the office, you head out to the trulli where you’ll stay. Ours was compact and comfortable. It’s a little way from central Alberobello, but walking through the town and taking in the streetscape made the distance feel short. The lanes are so narrow that only one car can get through, and wandering them felt a bit like being in a fairy tale, or seeing everything as a child would when it’s all new and strange. You’re living in a trulli rather than staying in a regular hotel. Just watch out when you’re finding your way back, because all the trulli look alike. Good luck!

Our trulli was up the hill, behind the cathedral and across from the trulli museum. The company has several properties in different styles and sizes. We loved the stay and really did feel transported back in time, right into the dark ages. The place was arranged to look like a medieval home, with modern things cleverly disguised, including the lights, switches, outlets, AC, heaters and even the toilet flusher 😀 The lighting is very dim, which I personally like, and we made full use of the many candles. There was a small fridge and a countertop, but no real kitchenette. If, like us, you want to have drinks and snacks while people watching from the “front porch” (the street), ask the hostess for plates, silverware and glassware. They aren’t provided as part of the staging. Check-in with the hostess was easy, and she was friendly, smiling and accommodating. She gave us a useful map and explained where to find everything. Don’t be surprised if nobody answers the phone, though, as she was never in the office. We went to the office address and waited for her to come back from checking some emails elsewhere.

Our Trulli was clean and spacious, with everything important for a stay of one night or more. Charming Trulli Charming & Tours has a few Trullis in town, and ours was in a pleasant, quiet area. Truli is small, so nothing is very far away. Recommended.

The trullo was clean and pleasant, and the Irish/Spanish guy handling check-ins was great. One thing to know: if having a pointed roof matters to you, ask for that kind in advance. We were a bit disappointed ours didn’t have one.
