We managed to find somewhere else to stay, luckily, but I found Mrs. María and her husband the worst hosts I’ve ever met. They were rude, unpleasant, and impolite. I called several days ahead to confirm the reservation and the agreed price. On the day, I let Mrs. María know I was on my way and agreed to give her 15 minutes’ notice before arriving. She then messaged me on WhatsApp saying the accommodation was no longer available, claiming I was taking too long to get there. It was 4:30 pm. Traffic wasn’t up to me, and I wasn’t required to arrive at the time she wanted. She knew we were traveling with a one-year-old child and didn’t seem to care that she was leaving us stranded. I called her five times without an answer and sent her several WhatsApp messages. Eventually she showed up with her husband in a very provocative mood, and he spoke to us rudely. They’d also failed to tell us the apartment had no elevator and involved 85 steps, even though they knew we had a child with us. I don’t consider these people trustworthy.

The location was great, close to the town center and the rocky beach, and the room was clean and comfortable. But we waited 15 minutes for the host in 40-degree heat, then had to climb to a fourth-floor room with no elevator. Given our luggage, I wish we’d known that in advance. Breakfast was a croissant, some store-bought jam, and orange juice. For the price, I didn’t feel we got good value.

The room was clean when we arrived, but we weren’t satisfied with the stay. The owner told me, “this is my problem; I need to learn to read better,” after I said we hadn’t understood from the description that the B&B was on the fourth floor with no elevator. That detail was a problem for us. I’m writing this to make the lack of an elevator clear, even though I’d read the full description. There’s no parking, as the booking information says. Don’t underestimate that: finding a space nearby wasn’t easy. The area has free street parking, but the streets around the B&B are busy and lined with residents’ homes. Even outside peak season, we spent at least 15 minutes driving around for a space every evening. Breakfast meant packaged snacks or rusks left in the room, and little else. When I mentioned this, the owner said that since breakfast was included, a snack was enough. I understand “breakfast included” differently, so that’s what the phrase means at this property. If you want towels cleaned or changed during your stay, ask directly. I left mine on the floor on the second-to-last day, as people usually do to have them changed. The lady came into the room to leave breakfast for the next day, but the towels were still not changed.

The room was clean, but over seven days it wasn’t cleaned again, and the towels only got changed after we specifically asked, three days in. The owner was mostly absent, both in person and by phone, and seemed almost irritated whenever she saw us. This B&B is in an old apartment building on the fourth floor with no elevator. That wasn’t mentioned, and carrying suitcases up was exhausting. It was described as central, but it’s actually a 1 km walk, and the street was dark at night. We were treated like strangers. Breakfast was awful: snacks in bags, counted out, including one coffee pod per person. Anything we didn’t eat was promptly taken away. The owner was quick to respond when we pointed that out, and also kept the kitchen doors firmly locked. Breakfast was left in the room for us to prepare ourselves at a tiny table. You could ask for another coffee, though.

Maria made us feel so welcome, and the room was spotless. We also really enjoyed the breakfast. I stayed here for five days with a dear friend, and leaving was hard. We’ll be back in Alghero, and we’ll stay with Maria again ❤️
