Podere Poggio Mendico

The view is nice and there's plenty of open space, but the host was very hard to reach and came across somewhat passive-aggressive when we did meet her. The place is down a badly maintained dirt road, far from anything. We found field mice in the house and came across a viper, which is typical of the Tuscan countryside. You really are on your own while staying here :)

Amazing views and a fantastic location.

I spent two nights at Podere Poggio Mendici during the antiques fair, and I wasn't happy with the stay. The room was poorly maintained and not very clean. One radiator didn't work and another leaked; the bathroom was tiny, and the shower took ages to get hot. There was only liquid hand soap, with no shower gel, shampoo, or other items, and the bathroom had no bidet. There wasn't any breakfast at all, and I thought €200 a night was far too much for what you get. The greenery was lovely, and BALU was wonderful, a gorgeous dog ready to greet you if you had a little something to eat. When I paid, I didn't get a receipt. I definitely won't be coming back. I hope they give the place some attention this summer, especially since there's a pool. Bah.

For 170 euros, what exactly did we get? The room was old and run-down, with no fridge or water, just four mandarins, two tea bags and a kettle. No one offered suggestions for places to eat or asked whether we wanted lunch or dinner the next day, which you might expect at a farmhouse. The big dog was lovely, but the rest was forgettable. Getting there meant driving about 1.5 km on a rough, muddy road full of potholes. Don't bring a low car. At reception, the owner's elderly father showed us the parking and room, then said he wasn't feeling well and we'd need to manage on our own. That part was no issue for us. We booked through Booking.com and paid 170 euros after the girl removed the tourist tax from the 174 euro price.
