I might have walked right past this theatre if it hadn’t been part of the Rick Steeves audio podcast Assisi town walk. It’s tucked into a residential neighbourhood, with a house right inside it, which is such a striking sight. It’s just off the nun spa. Seeing an old nunnery and church turned into a high end spa felt sad in one way, but interesting too. Enjoy the area!
Such a lovely spot. The view from the upper area was amazing, and hearing the church bells at noon made it even better.
There isn’t an amphitheatre to see anymore. Homes now fill the oval where it used to be. We passed by on a walking tour while staying nearby, and I wouldn’t make a special trip just for this.
Private houses now occupy the theatre’s inner oval, so there’s very little of the actual amphitheatre to see. Only the perimeter walls remain visible, and I can’t say for sure they’re Roman. A notice in the pavement by the entrance says “private property,” basically telling visitors to stay out.
It’s beautiful to see this space repurposed as a residential area.
