We spent three nights in the large suite in mid-August 2025. The six museums around the fortress have some interesting exhibitions, and the Alpine museum was my favorite. Breakfast is served in a separate room for hotel guests. By Italian standards there’s plenty, but as Scandinavians we found the options pretty mediocre. The restaurant only opens during the day, so dinner means taking the lifts and funiculars down to Bard. Allow about 30-40 minutes for the round trip. The hotel is on the top floor of Bard fortress, behind walls that are 3 m thick, in the southernmost part of the Aosta valley. Plan to arrive by 7 p.m. at the latest, since nearly all the staff leave then and only a night guard stays. From the free guest garage, it takes two elevators and three funiculars to get to the hotel. You can make the trip at night with your electronic key. We had a few small mishaps, nothing serious, so the stay was a mixed experience.

The ride up is part of the fun, with spectacular views along the way. Such a unique place to stay, right on top of a fortress. Loved it!

We were a family of four stopping for one night on the way to the airport after a week of skiing. Getting to the hotel takes a while: from the bottom of the car park, we took a lift to the top level, another to the ground-level fort entrance, then two funiculars because the top one was being repaired. A golf buggy took us and our bags the rest of the way. It’s not somewhere to expect to reach your room within 20 minutes of parking. Still, the trip was a lot of fun, and the place waiting at the top made it worth it a thousand times over. Cindy (or Sindy?) at reception greeted us like old friends. Our family suite was incredible, with a four-poster bed and Al Fresco paintings on the wall. There’s no restaurant, but Cindy booked us a table at a local pizzeria. The walk through the old town below was beautiful, and we kept stopping to take pictures of the fort. The views when we woke up were stunning. We had to head to the airport and couldn’t linger, and I don’t think I’ve ever been so sad to check out. I wish we could have stayed longer and explored the Fort. Pack light if you can, since there’s still a steep walk to the entrance from the top lift. If your bags are heavy, though, they’ll take care of you and send a golf buggy to help you up.

The hotel is right beside the Forte museum, and staying here gets you discounts for the museums and bookstore. Breakfast is included at the Forte cafè, with lots of excellent options. The rooms are spacious, with a fantastic view over the whole Valle d'Aosta. At night, walking around the top of the Forte made me feel like a nobleperson from another time. You can’t beat the setting: the Hotel is *inside* the historic Forte di Bard. It’s the most unique place I’ve stayed, and I absolutely recommend it. Getting there takes some effort, with five different elevators to use, but that comes with the structure of the Forte. The climb was well worth it.

A once-in-a-lifetime chance to stay in an old fort. Great experience, and the staff provided great service.
