Lorenzo was friendly and quick to respond, and he promptly sorted out a few things we pointed out. We stayed for a month. The apartment was roomy but a little dated, and the furniture could use an update. There are 22 apartments in the compound, with sheltered parking right outside the one we had. Zelata is tiny, but the location works well if you have a car. It's a manageable drive to the station for the metro into Milan centre, and there are supermarkets and nice restaurants in nearby towns. Some pleasant trails start close by, including walks to the bird observatory and the river.

A little village with a long history. Noble families still live there, and in the 1940s it was known for welcoming American as well as Italian actors. I still haven't managed to see the church, since its door was closed whenever I went.

The woods along this roughly ten-kilometer loop have been left to their natural cycle for decades, and the route briefly descends to the Ticino riverbed. Starting at the still vehicle-accessible pontoon bridge in Bereguardo (Pavia), you pass through Zelata, a tiny hamlet of Bereguardo. Near the farmhouse, fields are cultivated with close attention to biodiversity, giving many bird species refuge from the fungicides and pesticides widely used in our countryside. The Ticino Park Authority has long supported efforts to bring back healthy agriculture. I didn't expect such a natural setting along the banks of the Ticino River.
