JR Hotels Bologna Amadeus

We booked directly only a couple of hours before arriving and got a huge, very clean room that fit all of us. They also set up a crib for our baby at short notice. The breakfast buffet had a wide choice, from cakes to cereal and bread. Just off the highway, it was a great overnight stop on our way north, and we'll probably use it again. Booking directly was quite a bit cheaper for us than booking.com.

The hotel was hard to reach because maintenance work around it made the entrance and route to the main road difficult. Inside, the walls were so thin we could hear people talking and showering. Our room was tiny, with barely anywhere for two large suitcases and two carry-ons, and the outdated bathroom was awkward to move around in or shower in. The air conditioning didn't work, and the elevator, about 5' x 4', was so small I needed two trips to get our luggage upstairs. Breakfast only starts at 7 a.m., which is no use for most people catching early flights, so we had to skip what was supposedly free breakfast. I booked because it was near Guglielmo Marconi airport in Bologna, but that was a big mistake. This is not a 4-star hotel, and I’ll never book here or use this chain again. I wish I could give it zero stars.

The worst part was how the breakfast attendant treated me. I had to leave early for a flight, and although the breakfast setup was ready, the official start was still 15 minutes away. I went in for just one coffee, planning to drink it standing up while checking out. The attendant yelled that breakfast hadn't started and I couldn't have coffee. I explained I was leaving for my flight, but he kept shouting. I understand the hotel had 15 minutes left before service and may not be able to open earlier to avoid confusion. My complaint is the lack of politeness. I expected at least an apology, but given the rude attitude, I don't think one is coming. The hotel's distance from tourist attractions is also a problem for me, not just in miles but because there are no easy transport options like a metro or nearby buses, so getting around Bologna takes too long. The air conditioning couldn't be adjusted and was set very weak to save energy, so I was hot all night. I don't recommend staying here unless you're willing to deal with rude staff.

The food was great, and the rooms were clean and nicely furnished. It's a little out of the way, though public transport is available, and the staff can arrange a taxi if needed. Everyone was kind and helpful, especially the receptionists. Emanuela was delightful and really resourceful.
