Villa Benni

A friendly family-run house, full of courteous, caring people who preserve Italian history and are happy to share it. They also have excellent taste in food. The beautiful neoclassical home has very high ceilings, spacious rooms, luxurious bathrooms, and generous breakfasts. There’s care in every detail, from the windows and furniture to the many stories and curiosities. The whole place feels like a feast. The contrast is striking. After a short ride through lively central Bologna, we arrived late at night on a dark street and looked up at what seemed like a quiet, ominous mansion. It has the old gates and giant creaking doors that could make you imagine a haunted house on a stormy night, but the welcome was the opposite of that. You can feel as if you’re far out in the country, then find the rest of Bologna a vigorous walk to the right and the Sanctuary of the Madonna of San Luca a morning workout to the left. Both ways run under the famous porticos, so you can walk around Bologna whatever the weather. Walks around the property show layers of architecture reflecting the interests and tastes of the eras when it was founded and developed. There’s an underground stable and secret escape routes in case of war. It’s an epic, movie-worthy place that has appeared in some movies, and the wonderful hosts make it a rich experience.

A magnificent villa that stays with you. Breakfast was wonderful, with three different homemade cakes made daily plus lots of other choices. The ladies who have lived here most of their lives were so friendly and kind.

A beautiful place for weddings and events, with a private garden and a marvelous view of San Luca.
