Castell Matscher

The balcony view was breathtaking, and the apartment itself was new and modern while still feeling cosy and welcoming. We were lucky to be among the first guests at Castle Matscher. The kitchen was brand-new and well equipped, though we only used it for breakfast because we preferred having dinner at the nearby hotelw Krone, which has excellent dining options.

I’ve stayed at Castell Matcher three times now, about 10 days each visit, and always feel at home there. It’s beautifully furnished, and I sleep with the window open without waking in the night. The hillside setting means the air feels wonderful and the rooms never feel stuffy. I’m completely satisfied.

The noise made this a very poor stay. The highway passes right by the house, and the railway is just a few metres away, with loud signals often going off at night. Since there’s no air conditioning, sleeping with the window open is practically impossible. The walk up to the property is several hundred metres and quite steep. The coffee machine mentioned in the description was no longer there, just a small Italian espresso machine. The old town view may be available from the upper floors, but trees completely block it from lower down. We only got enough cutlery and dishes after complaining.

For anyone sensitive to heat or light sleepers, this apartment may be difficult. The highway runs right behind the building and the railway is in front, so keeping the doors and windows open to sleep isn’t really possible. There’s no air conditioning, and it gets hot and stuffy in summer. The windows do a good job of keeping out the sound when closed. The apartments are otherwise clean and very well equipped, with comfortable, high-quality furnishings.
