Some old beliefs say that primeval energies rise from beneath Calcata, inspiring stories about witches and the occult. There’s a reason for the underground associations: many houses have deep spaces below the ground floor, once used as cellars or tombs. The village has appeared in several films, including Amici miei, La mazzetta with Nino Manfredi and Ugo Tognazzi, and Nostalghia bt Tarkovskij. Calcata was gradually left behind from the 1930s, with safety concerns prompting residents to move to Calcata Nuova, built ten minutes away. Then, in the 1960s, artists, intellectuals, creatives, writers, and artisans from Italy and abroad discovered the old village. Some made it home, while others opened shops and workshops. About 70 people live there now.

We expected more than a room, and this one would be unsuitable for anyone claustrophobic. It’s called a bed and breakfast, but breakfast wasn’t provided.

The guesthouse sits right on Piazza Roma beside the village wall entrance, and it made for a lovely romantic stay in Calcata. Debby is friendly, attentive, and very helpful. The room’s esoteric decor is a real burst of color, with framed mirrors, playful lamps, and imaginative ornaments. The bedroom is spacious and lovely, with a little panoramic window looking over the walls and the landscape below. The bathroom is small but comfortable. Everything was clean and carefully looked after. There were welcome chocolates, water, soap, shampoo, and plenty of towels. I’d definitely recommend it.

A magical spot in the heart of Calcata, like a place outside of time. The artist’s room won me over with all its careful details. Deborah, the owner, was lovely and welcoming. I’ll definitely come back.

This room felt like Wonderland, and I loved it. My boyfriend had surprised me with the stay. I never met the owner in person, but got to know her through the notes she leaves around the room. I recommend spending at least one night here. Calcata is a beautiful village and worth a visit if you’re passing by.
