We arrived late in the evening, unfortunately, but it was really cool to walk through and see where Michelangelo was born. There are some sculptures to see, and entry costs four euros.

The staff were the highlight of our two-night stay. They went out of their way to help us settle in, cooked excellent meals for our group and adjusted the dining schedule to suit our needs. The room was very comfortable, in a lovely location, and I'd definitely stay there again if I had the chance. We were visiting La Verna Sanctuary at the start of a walking pilgrimage. Our tour company picked Buca di Michelangelo and made the booking. We stayed in an adjoining building rather than the main house, in what was almost a two-room suite: a living, dining and kitchen area, plus a good-sized bedroom and a bathroom with a shower. Everything was first class.

The restaurant was wonderful, with a gorgeous open-air view across the valley. The pork steak and French fries were fabulous. I stopped for one night while walking. The rooms were simple, clean and attractive, and the buildings are beautiful and classic. There's no elevator, so carrying suitcases is a challenge, and the rooms are across the little street.

Our room turned out to be a charming self-contained apartment. We ate at the restaurant on our first night and had to come back the next evening. Breakfast was included, light but with superb coffee and hot chocolate. The owners and staff made us feel very welcome. The language barrier was a little tricky, but phone translation got us through. We wanted to experience Tuscany somewhere out of the way, and this place delivered. Great views, incredible food and genuinely lovely hosts. We'll be back one day for sure. We've eaten here several times, and it remains one of our favourites. The staff are friendly and the service is great. Annalise is a joy. The traditional Tuscan food is delicious: the truffle salad is a must, the pastas are amazing, and the filet with porcini mushrooms is always cooked perfectly.
