Castello di Spessa Golf & Wine Resort

The breakfast was excellent, with loads of choice. Sadly, that was the one bright spot. We expected a lot from the photos and reviews, which made the stay all the more disappointing. The hotel has potential, but right now the price doesn't match what you get. From outside, it looks stunning and makes a strong first impression. After that, though, it was letdown after letdown. The hotel restaurant was closed, with no clear reason. Our room had castle-style furniture, but the bathroom was in terrible shape, and cobwebs on the walls made it seem like nobody had stayed there in ages. There was mold in both the fridge and shower. The toiletries felt far below what you'd expect: one plastic cup in a wrapper and a bar of soap in a paper box, which gave a very cheap impression. We were also shocked to be charged extra for the wellness area as paying guests, with only a 10% discount. Even after paying for the indoor spa, which cost twice as much, we weren't allowed to use the outdoor loungers. There were just two people outside at the time. We tried to order a bottle of prosecco. When we finally found the attendant, she left us standing by the pool, soaking wet in 23°C, while she collected small change and tidied a mattress left by other guests. She never came back to take our order. The service was disastrous and unprofessional. The hotel's cleanliness and service were both very poor. It felt like nobody cared, perhaps because hardly anyone goes there.

There isn't any food or drink in the main house apart from breakfast, and restaurants are a long walk away. The golf course has two restaurants, which are okay, and the course itself is nice. The only pool is in the spa, where children under 16 aren't allowed.

Romano made our evening at Castello di Spezza especially memorable. He was warm, professional, and attentive without hovering, and every suggestion he made was spot on. His care and eye for detail made us feel looked after throughout. The atmosphere was stunning and the food exceptional, with everything feeling thoughtfully put together. We left happy and full, and can't wait to return.

The included breakfast was excellent, with high-quality food and plenty of choice. The staff were so pleasant and professional, they seemed to know what we needed before we asked. My wife and I had a wonderful time here. There's a lot to do even if, like us, you don't golf. The rooms work well for short or longer stays, and the place has real history and class. We'd definitely come back.
