Casale del Borgo

Casale del Borgo was a lovely base for our week in Rome. It’s close to the sea and other places to visit, and the property is new and kept in good shape, both the furnishings and the cleanliness. Annarita welcomed us each morning with delicious cakes and great suggestions for things to do and places to go. We really enjoyed chatting with her every morning and felt very well looked after.

The place is new, spotless, and only about ten minutes from the sea. Annarita made cakes every day, especially delicious tarts and ring cakes that reminded me of my grandmother’s, and gave us ideas about where to go and what to eat. We were treated like family all week, and I’d happily come back. People should be civil, for example, don’t slam doors late at night or smoke where you shouldn’t. Some reviewers seem to expect an intercontinental hotel while paying for a B&B.

The location is in a lovely, green, well-kept area, and the property itself is very nice. At the room price, though, I expected more attention to the details. There’s no shower shelf, not even somewhere to put a bar of soap, and no mosquito net. The garden is overgrown and looks neglected. Those little things make it feel like there isn’t much care for guests at that price. Given the market prices, though, there’s nothing to complain about.

The worst part was trying to get help. On our first night, the TV didn’t work. We called Mrs. Filomena, but she never answered, and our messages about it got nowhere. It still wasn’t fixed over our three-day stay, even though on the last day we were told a technician would come. No one showed up. We also got no check-out instructions, so we left the keys with the cleaning lady ourselves. At €130 a night, this basic room wasn’t worth it. There’s no breakfast service or even a bar voucher, and the nearest bar is too far to walk to. The B&B is far from the center and public transport is poor. It’s managed remotely, which might be fine if help were available when needed. A terrible stay. We won’t be back.
