Colonia San Benedetto

I was a pupil at this beautiful colony, attending from third through fifth grade between 1975 and 1978. I’ve gone back to visit more than once over the years. It felt strange to see all the gates open to the public, when we used to be shut inside that immense place. But we never felt like prisoners, thanks in part to the gentle nuns who cared for us day and night. The parish priest then was Don Saverio, and the nun who looked after me was Sister Emiliana. I still have such lovely childhood memories. For years I’ve wanted to find some of the children who shared those good times with me, so I’m asking whether anyone recognizes themselves from those years at the colony.

The food was excellent, and the menu changed every day with both fish and meat available. Breakfast was the usual biscuits, toast, and jam; lunch and dinner each had a first course, second course, side dish, salad, and fruit. I had a wonderful time with the nuns on my first stay here with my family. It’s a quiet facility, the rooms are cleaned daily, and every room has air conditioning. There’s no fridge or TV in the room, but that didn’t matter to me on vacation.

We stayed at this "hotel" during a spiritual trip, and the warm, sweet welcome stood out. The rooms were tidy and well furnished with everything needed. Service was what disappointed us most: you have to put the dishes together yourself, then refill the water carafe yourself when you’re done, using water from the sink. The location is very convenient, right next to the station, and the convent has several terraces where you can watch sunsets over the sea. There’s also a Conad supermarket near the accommodation with a range of groceries.

We had a wonderful family holiday here. It’s a relaxing place with good food, and the rooms are simple and functional. The staff were excellent, very kind, and always willing to help. The sea is just a few steps away, and the location in Cetraro is strategic, with a sublime view. Highly recommended if you want a holiday with relaxation, the sea, and excellent cuisine.
