Hotel San Giorgio

The restaurant service was the one bright spot, friendly and attentive. The rest of the hotel felt old, damp, and badly maintained. There was visible humidity and a musty smell on the ceilings and walls, worn carpet that looked unclean, and a shower that flooded the bathroom floor even when closed. The bed was on the top floor and the bathroom on the lower one, so expect a midnight walk. It's close to the port, but don't expect a good night's sleep. The Wi-Fi was extremely slow, even simple online tasks were difficult, and even still water cost extra. I'd never seen that in a hotel, however simple. The experience was disappointing, and it didn't deliver what it promises or the standards you'd expect for its price and rating. Never again. Stay in Rome, it's an hour drive. I wouldn't stay here again.

We had a comfortable room with a fantastic water view, and it gave us a chance to recover from our transatlantic flight and adjust to the time change. Breakfast and coffee were included, another nice bonus. Hotel San Giorgio is charming and well located in the heart of the port city. My wife and I arrived in Civitavecchia two days before our cruise, after hearing good things from other cruisers. I researched the hotel and saw no reason not to try it ourselves. A few weeks before arriving, I called the desk to arrange transport from FCO. A professional driver met us at the airport, handled our luggage, drove us to the hotel, and unloaded our bags. We got there early and went out to explore the city. When we came back for check-in, our bags had been taken to room 220. We were told the breakfast hours, too. On departure day, Mette, a lovely lady from Denmark, helped arrange the hotel's shuttle to the port for a minimal fee. The hotel has the credentials to deliver passengers directly to the ship's terminal, not just inside the port gate, which is a real benefit. Hotel San Giorgio met or exceeded our expectations, even though we'd booked without seeing it. We'll be back for our 2026 cruise and whenever Civitavecchia is on the itinerary.

The rooms look as if they haven't been updated since the 80s, though the bathrooms are nicer. I've stayed in Best Westerns with better bedrooms, and finding an outlet to charge devices is a challenge. You may have to move furniture to get to one. It's 10€ for breakfast and 70€ for the hotel shuttle to take four of us to the cruise port. We have to check out by 10 AM, but the shuttle doesn't take us until noon, so I guess we'll sit in the lobby with our luggage for two hours. The location near the cruise port is convenient, but that's the best I can say. This may have been a 4-stars hotel when it opened several decades ago, but it definitely isn't now. I'd save the money for a true 4-star hotel and skip this one.

The location is very good, but that's the only positive I can speak to. I can't comment on the food. The service wasn't good: the front desk staff were rude and unpleasant, with no customer service. I'd only stay one night if I were cruising the next day, just because of the location.
