You’ll need a car to stay here. The place is out of the way, and the bus service is unreliable enough that we couldn’t relax while we were out, always working out how long we had before the bus back. There are breathtaking views from the right side of the hotel. We were first given a room facing the only, busy road, so it would have been walls or traffic to look at. The proprietor kindly offered us another room overlooking Vesuvius and the valley for €50 more. Wow, what a view, though there’s only so many times you can say that. The place reminded me of a 1960s Bond villain’s lair, and the inside has the same look. It needs a ton of money spent to bring it into the 21st century, though it was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was basic but adequate. There was no coffee in our room or milk, and no butter at breakfast. Restaurants weren’t open Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, so on the Monday we arrived we had vending machine food for dinner. We thought about walking to the nearest pub for a nightcap, but with no pavements or streetlights, that was a no-go.

The staff were always welcoming, friendly, and polite, and the food we tried was good value. Still, if you want luxury, I wouldn’t rate this as a 4-star hotel or recommend it. For a place to have a simple breakfast and sleep, it’s a decent stay for the money. It’s remote, so you need a car or regular taxis. There are a few spaces along the busy main road, while night parking is behind a gate opened at reception, with a small area at the back. The hotel offers dinner, usually pizza, but it never seemed properly open. Loud parties appeared to happen every night and disturbed our meal, so we didn’t eat there again. The amazing view is the main reason people come. Our room was a good size, but had no fridge and only a small TV. The mini shower gels were inconvenient, there seemed to be hair in the radiator, and the shower temperature kept changing. Breakfast was basic, with cold cereal, yoghurt, toast, juice, and coffee available on request.

The hosts were kind, and the room had an exquisite view. Everything else was perfect too. There was a wedding on Saturday, though, so you might want earplugs for sleeping. Highly recommend staying here.

We got good value for money, fortunately, because the hotel itself is old. The view was wonderful, and the terrace was very large, so make sure you enjoy it. We had an issue with the shower water and told the hotel. Breakfast was a bit poor in quality.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: if you’re a Premier inn person, this place probably isn’t for you. I love a bit of adventure and somewhere beautifully imperfect, so I say book now. The staff were amazing, parking was free, and the hotel sits up the side of a mountain with stunning views of Vesuvius. I drove 1400 miles to get here and loved every minute.
