The mosaics are impressive, and the explanations of the villa's layout are great. It's much larger than I expected, and it's amazing to think how much has survived underground for thousands of years.

The audio guide is free to download from the app or play store, and it really helps you picture how beautiful the Villa Romana once was. There was even a large swimming pool overlooking Lake Garda, an ancient infinity pool. Some mosaics are well preserved. You can see better-preserved villas in places such as Sicily, but the mosaics and the guide's explanations still make this visit worthwhile, especially for the small ticket price.
It's very beautiful and well maintained. Definitely download the audio guide and follow its room-by-room descriptions. I recommend the combined ticket for three archaeological sites, castello scaligero, Grotte di Catullo, and villa romana, for 18 euros. Villa Romana di Desenzano del Garda is an important late Roman archaeological site in northern Italy, on the southern shore of Lake Garda. This luxurious lakeside villa was built between the 4th and 5th centuries AD. It may have belonged to a wealthy landowner, perhaps involved in local farming or trade. The surviving floor mosaics are especially notable, showing hunting scenes, wild animals, cupids fishing, and geometric designs that offer a glimpse of Roman elite tastes and lifestyle. Excavations began in the late 1920s and uncovered living quarters, reception rooms, baths, and service areas. There's now a small museum with finds such as ceramics, coins, and tools, as well as panels that help visitors imagine the villa in its prime. Given its location and rich decoration, Villa Romana di Desenzano is often compared with the mosaics at Aquileia and Ravenna. It also offers a glimpse into the shift from the Roman Empire to the early Middle Ages in northern Italy.
This is a very well presented site, with beautiful mosaic floors. The foundations and flooring are in impressive condition for a property of this age.
We almost missed this gem. We only learned about it when we bought a ticket for the castle in Sermione that included entry to the excavation. It's not huge, but the ruins and mosaics are impressive. We spent about 30 minutes there, and it was worth the visit.
