Rifugio Mulaz

The location, atmosphere, and service were fantastic, but the dorm was tiny and packed, with no room to move or breathe, no hooks, and everyone on top of each other. Even in a high-altitude mountain hut, there should be somewhere to hang clothes and enough space not to keep bumping into people. Hygiene felt impossible, and my husband and I both got sick after staying here. Under the beds was dirty. Only one shower worked, and the queue was so long we had to wash at the sink without privacy. The toilets didn’t lock either. The bread was dry and stale, and the same bread came at breakfast with one butter sachet and one Nutella sachet. That was it. Dinner was a small serving of greasy meat and potatoes, followed by a tiny panna cotta. There were very few snacks to buy, with a big hiking day ahead. If you stay here, bring a clothesline and pegs for hanging things, plenty of extra snacks for calories, and soap and a cloth for washing.

The location is breathtaking, and the beds are comfortable. The people working at this Refugio were very friendly. It was a memorable stop on my Alta Via 2, with good food, generous portions, and plenty of choices.

It’s a great hut in a great location. The water isn’t drinkable, so bring enough for the next day or buy bottles at the hut. The minestrone with wurstel is a good choice for energy on a walk.

During my six-day Alta Via trip, this was the best experience of all. It was a full house when I visited, and I enjoyed being around all the people and hanging out with friends, as well as meeting new ones. I ordered goulash with potato for dinner at every hotel on the trip, and the one here was the best.
