Il Tiglio

We were passing through on our way to Puglia and stayed just one night. The owner greeted us warmly and showed us around. The bathroom was meant to be shared with another room, but during the COVID period he was renting out only one room, so we had it to ourselves. The room and bathroom were very clean. The only letdown was the old, rusty holders for the towels and toilet paper. Breakfast was basic: a capsule coffee machine, juice, jam, milk in cartons, and two fresh croissants the owner left on the table. Guests can use bikes, and it’s about a 15-minute walk to the town center.

The host is kind, helpful, and easy to reach if you need anything. The B&B is peaceful, with a small garden and veranda, and bikes are available. It’s a five-minute walk to the town center and about twenty minutes to the beach. It feels like a mini-apartment, with an entrance area set up for breakfast, tea and herbal teas, a fridge, a little antechamber, and a bathroom. We’ll be back.

It’s so quiet and peaceful at night, and the owner is kind and helpful without hovering. You can borrow a bike for free, and the center of Fano is a ten-minute walk away. Breakfast has fresh croissants, juice, and toast, with coffee and water included. The one downside for me was the hot drink selection at breakfast.

The welcome was awful. The owner and his girlfriend came across as aggressive and arrogant, and mocked me with nasty smiles. Later, when I was leaving at 10, I saw him suddenly come out to whisk away the basket of jam, apparently in case guests might take it. The place is an old two-story house from the 1960s or 1970s. The owner lives upstairs with his girlfriend, while two very basic guest rooms are on the ground floor and share one bathroom. He only takes cash, no credit cards, which already struck me as a bad sign. The shutters on his apartment were kept fully closed, as if he were hiding. Outside it looked shabby, abandoned, and dirty, with dead plants, weeds, and old broken pots and a watering can left on the ground. Only the breakfast room had been partly updated. The rest was very dated, though passable. Breakfast was a bare-bones cold spread: four small, sticky, dusty jam portions, one packet of toast, and very cold juice I didn’t dare try. No biscuits, pastries, or cereal. Maybe they’ll bring a cold croissant from the bar if you ask, but it isn’t included. For something hot, there was only a tasteless coffee from a pod machine that was full of dust and hair. There weren’t even tea bags or tea or herbal tea pods with the cup. The sheets had lots of hair on them, which was disgusting. I found some on the furniture, floor, and in the bathroom too. Both bedroom doors had a huge, ugly drawing of a doll or little girl from the 1960s or 1970s.
