The apartment view and porch were lovely. Casatorre in Ponticello was the best part of our week-long trip around northern Italy. It is a thousand years old, and the tower once stood a storey higher. It was built to protect residents from Germanic raiders coming from the north. With a car or bike, there's plenty nearby to explore, including a mountain hike in the Logarghena and the medieval villages and towns of Pontremolo, Filetto and borgi di Pontellicello. We also tried testaroli pasta, which you can only find in the Lunigiana valley. For fresh produce, we'd recommend Beba Frutta grocers, and there's the Stainer chocolate factory too, where the owner makes bespoke Pesto chocolate as a labour of love.

Our friends stayed in the tower next door, while our apartment had two bedrooms and would suit a whole family. The property has been passed down through the owners' family for over 800 years, and they showed us around this historic place. The home is now divided into four apartments, with a swimming pool available in summer. It's an incredible setting, charming to the max, and a great base for exploring North Today. This isn't a new Marriott, so expect a few quirks.

We loved the pool, and the nearby medieval towns were fun to explore. A perfect spot for a family vacation in Tuscany!

A peaceful spot with lovely views, a garden, and clean, comfortable rooms.

A small, pretty village.
