Hotel Royal

The staff were excellent, the room was clean and well serviced, and it had a good shower and bidet. The food was plentiful, though not brilliant. The room itself was large, but the furniture needs updating and paint was peeling from the walls. Our balcony looked over houses rather than the pool, and the windows had blown. At first the sink water came out muddy, but eventually cleared. The TV didn’t work, though it was only in Italian and German, so I wasn’t bothered. We stayed five nights, and the place needs a major refurbishment.

It’s a dated hotel that seems aimed mainly at older guests. The rooms are fine for a three-star place, and it’s conveniently close to Garda. Breakfast was horrible, with prunes, dry bread and cheap brought-in cake. I guess the older guests like that.

The pool and location are great, and there’s plenty of parking. The hotel itself is OK, with old but still working furniture and facilities. Breakfast was fine, though some things were too oily, around 6-7/10. The price is reasonable for the pool, location and breakfast, but the air conditioning is awful. On our first visit it didn’t work, and the attempted repair failed. This time it technically worked, but it was installed in the hall and didn’t cool the room at all. I had to sit underneath it in the hall just to cool down a little. It might as well not have been there. With the weather so hot, it became unbearable and we had to leave a day early. They really need to invest in proper AC.

Three stars seems about right for Hotel Royal. The rooms are clean and a reasonable size, so it’s fine for a night or two. The hotel feels tired and could use a refresh, especially the footpaths, and some renovation work would help.
