We loved staying in this authentic place away from the usual tourist routes. It felt like a little paradise, and I only wish we’d booked a week instead of two nights. The village is medieval, peaceful, and high up in the mountains. Breakfast was delicious, and the service and hospitality were great. Getting to the B&B takes a bit of effort: from the parking area, you walk a few hundred meters along uneven cobblestones and narrow lanes, since there’s no road all the way there. For that reason, it isn’t recommended for people with physical disabilities. We came with our nearly two-year-old daughter, who loved it, and it worked for us, though it may not suit every family with young children.

Lorenzo made us feel at home and even cooked an original pasta dish late in the evening while the family recovered from the journey. Some local vino was the perfect finish. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and have all the modern conveniences, yet the place still has a Braveheart feel, as the kids might say, a movie from the 90s. Getting there means handling the serpentines, which is normal in Italy. Once you do, it feels like stepping back more than 600 years, with mobile phone chargers included. This tiny village sits quietly in the hills, with time seeming to stand still. Cobblestone paths, arches, and stairs lead to the B&B on the hill’s edge. A lovely find for a peaceful stay in the hills, not far from the sea and other notable attractions.

This is a mountain retreat for people who enjoy a simple place and are open and curious about their surroundings. After 18 years running this B&B, the hosts say it suits guests with a young spirit. Don’t expect a sleek, hotel-like B&B. Baldo e Chicca is in the medieval village of Cassagna, in the Sestri Levante hinterland, about 400 meters above sea level and a half-hour drive from the coast between Genoa and the 5 Terre. The atmosphere is very informal, with essential services. The rooms are set in very old spaces, but each has its own entrance and private bathroom.
