Grand Hotel Astoria

We took the ferry from Grado Mole Torpediniere to Trieste and wandered around by bici. It let us see a lot, from the old harbor area to the historical center. Caffe Sacher on Via Alighieri Trieste was its own treat, with Sacher Torte, Assam tea and a machiatone. Back at the hotel, the free bycicles were handy, and the staff were happy to lend them even for the trip to Trieste. Everyone was friendly and service minded, from reception and the restaurant to housekeeping, the bar and garage staff. They greeted us with a smile and “bon giorno” each morning. After a long day out, we asked for a water cooker so we could have tea and rest, and they brought one to our door. Our new room on the first floor, front side, was very nice, with a balcony. We stayed the first week of October 2025. It was very clean, and the outside noise didn't come through, even when things were bustling.

The pools and spa were superlative, and the staff were attentive and personable with everyone. We had a lovely time at your beautiful hotel and will consider it for future holidays. One small thing made me laugh: the round side mirror beside the big bathroom mirror was set so high I'd have needed to be 1,90 meters tall to use it! 😄

Breakfast and coffee were great, and we had a good time overall. The place was clean and the service nice. We were let down by the rooftop pool, since we'd expected it to be heated, though the indoor pool was pleasantly warm.

A lot of guests seemed elderly and really fond of this hotel. It is clean and well run, but the newer room technology needs sorting out, especially the HVAC and temperature controls. Even though the rooms have controls, you can't adjust the temperature yourself and have to call the front desk. Sometimes they can get it working, sometimes they can't. We stayed in a newly renovated “wellness room,” and it doesn't seem quite ready yet. They tried every day to fix the air conditioning, but never offered to move us to another room. Breakfast was the same every morning, with lots of meat and cakes. Fresh melon or pineapple would be much better than fruit in water or syrup. It would also help if breakfast ran until 10:30. On holiday, it's nice to sleep in and still have time to eat.
