The quiet natural surroundings are a plus in some ways, but there are lots of mosquitoes and a swampy smell. You can order a good dinner here. Still, our family room has been a frustrating stay. Don't book it. It has no air conditioning, despite the booking listing saying it should. There's just a fan, and about 0.5 m2 of mold on the wall. Outside it's 26 degrees, while inside the room it's around 30. The description says the family room has two bathrooms, but there's only one, with doors separating the shower and toilet and a single sink. Staff say there is an air conditioner but that it's broken, though I can't see any AC unit. What bothers me most is that the service doesn't match the description. Air conditioning is a must in Italy.

The hotel is tucked away among water, between a river delta and the sea, in a bird sanctuary. Nights are very dark there, so you get a deep view of the sky. From most bedrooms there’s a stunning view over the Gulf of Trieste. The staff have a relaxed, informal manner, while the owner cooks lovely fish brought fresh every morning from a nearby fishing village. In the good season, the hotel has bikes available, which make it possible to reach places like Grado, the sanctuary on Isola di Cona, the castle of Miramare, and Trieste. We’ve visited twice, once in fall and once in winter, and loved it both times.

There are walking paths starting here that go on for miles. The raised path down to the river is nice, and there’s enough parking. The bar is open during winter, or at least on weekends.
