My best castle visit ever. Just watch your head!

Giacomo G.
Gualdo Cattaneo feels like a small treasure chest of stone, perched above the hills. Its medieval look is a little stern but also reassuring. The walls, towers and alleys seem ancient, yet the place is still lived in. Nothing feels planned or polished. It’s authentic, and perfectly imperfect. From the square, the fortress stands out with its triangular shape and three towers. It looks beautiful, but also solid, almost like quiet protection. It doesn’t need dressing up to make an impression. The churches have the same unassuming character. Look closely and there are carved portals, worn stones and frescoes holding on through time. There’s a special kind of silence here, full of old echoes rather than emptiness. It follows you through the narrow streets and makes you slow down and breathe more deeply. Gualdo Cattaneo takes its time getting to know you. It’s somewhere to savor slowly, like a wine that needs time to open up. When you leave, you carry away a little piece of something real.

From outside the walls, a picturesque route leads up to the village and castle. The fortress, usually called “dei Borgia,” dates to the last quarter of the 15th century. A massive tower marks its silhouette as it overlooks the valley below.

Gualdo Cattaneo is an interesting castle village that has kept its medieval layout. The walls give it an unusual teardrop shape, and within them the old center still includes the city walls, fortress and much of the village, with churches, narrow lanes, stairways, underpasses and hanging gardens. There aren’t major buildings or famous artworks of great artistic importance, but the village is worth seeing for how well preserved, cared for and clean it is.

A welcoming, clean little village up on the hill. Beautiful.
