La Maison Galu

The pool was full of dead insects, so it wasn't much of a place to relax. Breakfast meant a long drive to Sperlonga, and it didn't sit well with my stomach. The rooms felt dated, with a 1990s style and sheets stained by dead mosquitoes. The property sits atop a mountain without Wi-Fi or internet, and it's isolated from both Gaeta and Sperlonga, about a 20-minute drive from each. I stayed around three years ago, and that trip left such a bad impression that I'm writing this now. Maybe it's changed since then, but that's how I found it. I would definitely avoid this B&B. If you're after a relaxing weekend, don't choose it.

We stayed in a beautiful mini-apartment that was kept in immaculate condition. The gardens and paths were just as carefully maintained, and there was a comfortable hammock. In the common area, there's a lovely indoor lounge with a pool table, a library, and a fireplace. Outside, a big terrace has tables, sofas, and a swing beneath a gorgeous pergola of delicious strawberry grapes. There's also a wonderful pool with a handy wet bar. A stunning, welcoming place, and the people are courteous. I'd highly recommend it for a chance to unwind away from the usual daily bustle. Five stars, deserved.

Breakfast is generous, and Fabio makes you feel like an old friend from the moment you arrive. The cottages sit among trees and flowers, giving you a real sense of being away from everyone, while the different room styles let you choose how tucked into nature you want to be. There’s a pool just a short path away, carefully looked after by Fabia, and breakfast outside among all that greenery is a lovely extra. Getting there takes patience: the country road is very narrow in places, so meeting an oncoming car can get tricky. It’s a peaceful little oasis, and it’s best to book well ahead since availability is limited.

The bungalow was clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. Outside, there was a hammock and swing area plus a little patio for two, nice for winding down later in the evening. The place is spread over several levels and feels thoughtfully arranged, with nature all around. We were welcomed warmly and felt at home right away, while the owners stayed friendly and discreet. Up on the terrace, the pool and solarium are lovely, with a wet bar and loungers under a natural kiwi gazebo. Sperlonga and the sea are about ten kilometers away, reached easily by one provincial road through the mountains. There are so many details to take in that you really have to experience the place. I hope we can come back to this Mediterranean gem.
