Casa Chanoux

Casa Chanoux turned out to be much nicer than the large hotel in the center where we'd stayed 10 years before. We came back to La Thuile at the end of February 2020, but the ruble exchange rate had made that hotel too expensive. Our hostess was wonderful, and I'd like to send her my regards. We had a ground-floor apartment with a fireplace and free firewood. It was neat and clean, with plenty of dishes and kitchen utensils, and the old stone house and vaulted ceilings were beautiful. The owners let us park our rental car in their own lot, just 200 meters from our room. That's a real help in this tiny town, where parking is challenging. Ski storage is across from the apartment entrance, and the lift is very close. It's a 7-minute walk to the slope, then once you put on your skis you can ski down to the main lift in 30 seconds. Everything was excellent, and I'd recommend it for a relaxing holiday. A note for drivers: car GPS doesn't show the road to the hotel and may direct you to San Bernard Pass. Check the map carefully before setting off. There is a perfectly good road, but GPS treats it as a pedestrian route. Since the town is on a mountain, summer tires can cause problems on the climbs during snowfall. When renting a car, it's best to get winter tires or at least chains in the trunk, or you may not be able to drive up the hill. The drive from Turin is convenient: 200 km on an empty toll road at 160 km/h takes only 2 hours. We've skied in the mountains for 15 years and traveled all over the Alps, so we know the area well. La Thuile is a remarkable place for skiing, with a large ski area and uncrowded slopes and lifts. The ski area is shared with France, and because La Thuile often gets windy, you can head to the sunny La Rosier area in France instead. The slopes there are wide and uncrowded. I highly recommend it.

Mirella and her husband were wonderful, always ready to help and take care of whatever we needed. We had a wonderful week at Mirella's house in La Thuille. The place was clean, welcoming, and had all the comforts we could want, especially the fireplace, which came in handy even in August. Highly recommended!

We had a really pleasant week in the apartment. It was very clean, had everything we needed, even a hairdryer, and was in an excellent location.
