Locanda del Sole Nero

During our three weeks in Italy, this was easily our favorite restaurant. The food is spectacular, and the hospitality from Leandro and his wife is even better. They’re warm and welcoming, and serve authentic Ligurian cooking. Leandro is a witty, engaging host who makes you feel at home. The meal is yours to enjoy for the evening, in that relaxed “cena tranquilla” style. There are much pricier places in Lerici that don’t come close to this food. Book ahead, and you may find yourself wanting a table every night. So glad we found it.

We ate at the restaurant seven times during our stay in Lerici and tried everything on the fish menu. We were very pleased with it all. The atmosphere was great, the interior is nicely painted, and we could watch the Olympics while we were there.

We’ll be coming back often. The pasta with whiskey and mushroom sauce was outstanding. A year later, it’s still amazing, especially the tagliatelle al pesto di rucola, which are out of this world!

Low-key and informal, with fabulous food and a high standard of service. My husband has coeliac disease, and the lovely owner made us the tastiest gluten-free food, including his own homemade gluten-free bread. He went above and beyond, and I got the sense he treats all his customers with the same care. Italy can be difficult for people with coeliac disease, so finding this place was a real treat. We’ll be back, and might even stay in his guesthouse next time.
