We saved Villa Neri for the end of our two-week trip around Sicily because we wanted a luxury stay near Mount Etna. It ended up being the most disappointing hotel of the trip, and possibly one of the worst five-star experiences we've had. The grounds are attractive, but breakfast, the pool, and the service didn't feel five-star, and there are plenty of better places to spend your money in Sicily. Our room lock broke, leaving us locked out for about 45 minutes. It then stayed unusable for the rest of the stay, along with the lights. The staff's solution was to suggest leaving the door partly open. With the broken key-card system controlling the electricity, we had no working lights in the room. We had to pack for an early flight and use the bathroom in the dark. I'm also someone who's had two hip surgeries, and it would have been nice to be asked whether a room up a flight of stairs was okay. The Wi-Fi in our original room never worked, despite repeated complaints and several devices being unable to connect. We showed screenshots from both phones, our laptops, and an iPad, but staff insisted the Wi-Fi worked. We were told an engineer had fixed it, but it still didn't work. Looking at earlier reviews afterward, connectivity seems to have been a problem before. We were moved to what looked like a lower room category, and towels were missing more than once. The biggest issue was how management handled it. Problems were minimized, questioned, or denied. The hotel acknowledged what happened and offered a refund, but at checkout we were told the manager wasn't available and that we'd be contacted to arrange it. We never got a call or email. When we followed up, they refused to honor the promise.

The restaurant team deserves credit for the amazing food at reasonable prices. Try the Neri wine too 😍. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and the rooms and facilities are first class. From the moment we arrived, the front desk team welcomed us with a genuine smile. Staff were helpful without the fake, overdone politeness you can get at hotels of this level. Hotel Manager, well done. When staff do a good job, management deserves credit too.

For a Five Star SLH hotel, I was disappointed by the shower in our room. It was so tiny I couldn't turn around. Apparently some rooms have huge showers, but many don't, so check what you're getting before you stay. It's the smallest hotel shower I've ever seen.

The rooms were clean and spacious, and housekeeping was excellent. We felt very well looked after, especially at the restaurant, where the food and service were top quality. They wanted us to have a good time and brought complimentary desserts and coffee afterward. Breakfast on the terrace was a treat, and we all loved the almond granita. Gabriella was a wonderful hostess and made sure nothing was too much trouble. When we left, she packed bottles of ginger ale for our drive to Catania airport.

The price was hard to justify given the experience. The room had a worn bed that left us with back pain, and the shower was cramped and unpleasant. We also heard a steady hum from the outdoor ventilation on the balcony, which took away from the quiet natural setting. Our room didn't give us the full valley or Mount Etna panorama we expected at this price. The hotel is quite remote, so it would have helped to have more well-organized things to do on site, along with an introduction to the area, wineries, and nearby trips. We couldn't get help arranging a tasting at Benanti, though Benanti welcomed us when we contacted them ourselves. Service also seemed thin: the sommelier was covering both the beach bar and restaurant, and neither the beach bar nor lobby bar had staff at aperitivo time. There was no gym either. The service, facilities, and overall stay didn't feel worth the high-end price.
