Hotel Villa Augustus

The entrance has a lot of charm, and the hotel is very conveniently placed near the port. But our bags were still sitting where we'd left them when we came back around midnight after check-in. I thought someone might take them up, especially since our room was on the top floor and there’s no elevator. The bathroom was the bigger problem: the shower floor is level with the rest of the room, so water spread everywhere. There was hair on the floor that wasn't ours, which made me question how thoroughly things were cleaned, especially during a pandemic.

Getting around was easy from this hotel, particularly if you're arriving by ferry or picking up a scooter or car. The check-in situation was confusing, though. I arrived at 14.00, the time listed on hotels.com, but was told that only meant check-in could start then and didn't guarantee room access until 16.00. I haven't run into that at another hotel. I did get my room before 16.00 in the end, but the exchange put a damper on the rest of my stay. I don't speak Italian, and none of the staff spoke English, so communication was difficult and there were plenty of misunderstandings.

We stayed for 3 nights, and the hotel was great value. The garden felt really cozy, the room was comfortable, and the location was excellent. Breakfast was good, too.

The garden is lovely and the hotel is well placed for the city center. The rooms are fine, though the furnishings are starting to feel dated. Breakfast wasn't anything special. They really should have another coffee machine, too. An Nescafé instant coffee machine feels like a letdown in an Italian hotel.
