We had a great time on our recent return, nearly thirty years after our first stay, but the accommodation left us a bit disappointed. The rooms are still much as I remembered: clean, some with balconies, and reasonably equipped, though sparsely so. There weren’t even scissors, and the rooms smelled of old cigarette smoke. The residence itself was much quieter than Macugnaga used to be, and early in the week it was hard to find open bars or restaurants. With nobody around to ask, that was frustrating. I messaged for information on WhatsApp, but replies were limited and often late. We were given an entry code and let ourselves in, with no staffed reception like there used to be. The only people we saw were the cleaners on the first day. Stube bistro, which is advertised as part of the residence, didn’t open until Friday night. By then it was full when I tried to book. It would’ve helped to know the opening hours and have a chance to reserve before arriving. It feels like a lot of costs have been cut at the expense of service.

The location worked really well for us, close to the funivia and handy for bars and shops. We had a small apartment with a kitchen, and it was comfortable and warm.

The apartment was clean, and the bathroom especially so. The location was excellent. Just one thing, a single toilet roll for four people really isn’t enough. It’d also be useful to have dish soap and garbage bags in the kitchen, maybe a few packets of oil, vinegar, and salt too.
