Botanico San Lazzaro Hotel

Friends told me about this hotel while I was staying at a B&B in Maiori. We went up in the evening for dinner at the restaurant, which looks out over the town and coastline. It felt magical, with Ravello visible in the distance. The food and service were great, and the Amalfi Coast is at its best at night. The hotel sits above town, reached by a unique elevator and then about 50 steps.

We'd love to return. The staff were friendly, responsive and helpful throughout, and made our 24th wedding anniversary holiday feel special. Our room had a huge bed and a lovely jacuzzi bath, while the balcony view was stunning. Food and drinks were excellent, and breakfast was a treat every morning. Getting to reception is an experience in itself, with a lift, a funicular and then 77 steps. The view at the top makes it worthwhile. Huge respect to the staff who carry suitcases up all those steps!

It's a real treat staying here. There are lots of places around the property to relax, and the whole place feels magical, like a hidden gem cared for with love and good taste. The rooms are classy and very clean, with quality sheets and towels. The spa is beautiful, and the service was incredible. The elevator is a fun extra, and gets you to the main street in at most three minutes.

The view is spectacular, but I left very disappointed after a weekend here. My room cost over €800 a night, and I expected a certain level of respect for that price. The woman serving breakfast was so rude I couldn't believe I was being treated that way. There were very few amenities, no turn-down service, and the room cleaning was lackluster. I also paid €99 for the worst massage I've ever had, and €8 for water at the pool.
