The only bright spot was the service staff. Our final night was miserable: ants came out of the outlets and floors and ended up beside our bed pillows. We had to clear them ourselves to keep them out of bed, and stayed awake all night. We'd first noticed a couple in the room on day one, then found more in the bathroom, room corners, and near the bed on day two. Housekeeping didn't clear them when they came in. Melania refused compensation and told us to remove open food, although we had none. At checkout she wouldn't speak with us or apologize for the trouble. It felt like nobody cared that we were unhappy. Expedia had also advertised a free beach shuttle, a laundry room, and a spa, but none was available or mentioned. This felt more like a mountain hotel than a luxury stay, and wasn't worth the price.

The staff were smiley and lovely, the food was great, and the location was perfect. I really wanted to give five stars, but our room was a letdown. We paid extra for the deluxe room after seeing a website photo that seemed to show outdoor seating. There was no balcony or outdoor sitting area, no windows, and not even a table. We had to go to the pool bar for an evening drink, and it wasn't open every night. When I asked why it was called deluxe, I was told it was larger than the other rooms and the only one with skylights. Those windows were tiny and didn't seem worth the extra cost. I asked whether they could make it right, but they said no and offered a parking discount that came to just 7 euros after taxes. We felt cheated and deflated. The bed wasn't comfortable for us, though we know memory foam is a personal preference. Stick with the standard room, and thank you to the staff for the good service.

The sea and sunset views are beautiful, the property is lovely, and the rooms were spacious and clean. Staff were incredibly helpful. The location is the main thing to keep in mind: there's little within walking distance, including bars, supermarkets, or restaurants. A taxi from Sorrento to the hotel cost us 60 euros. On arrival, we were told that was a typical taxi experience for travelers in Sorrento. The public bus is a fairly convenient alternative, though it can get very busy. Unfortunately, we didn't enjoy the hotel's breakfast much.

Melrose Relais is a lovely family-run hotel, with well-kept grounds, very clean rooms, and staff who go above and beyond. We had room 307, with a terrace facing Capri, and enjoyed breakfast every day. The pancakes were outstanding. Drinks were the downside. We were careful with what we ordered and still somehow spent 100 euros. A small Peroni and Coke Zero came to nearly 14 euros, even though we were told the Peroni cost 6. Drinks seemed similarly expensive across the board, which felt especially unreasonable given the cost of the stay. I'd recommend Melrose and come back, but I'd avoid buying anything at the bar.

We stayed four nights. The room was very good, and checking in and out was seamless. The poolside food was very expensive: our meal with two drinks cost over 100€. The bartender, though, was polite. Breakfast could also be better, and that's where the service lost half a star. We were told there were no buses and that a taxi was the only way to travel up and down the island. A shuttle would be a great option for guests.
