The staff were friendly, and fortunately, despite the nearby bars being crowded and open late, we couldn’t hear the noise from our room. The historic center of Massa Marittima is charming and full of restaurants serving traditional food, though perhaps a little too touristy. The hotel is clean but very dated. It has no parking of its own apart from a small lot elsewhere, which was full when we arrived, so we had to use the blue-lined parking area at €1 an hour. Breakfast was poor, though I’ve seen worse.

The location in the center of town is very nice, and the rooms were okay, though quite small. Breakfast was adequate, but the table cleaning was a problem. We arrived at 9:10 AM, with service running until 10:00 AM. Two tables were occupied, and the rest were dirty with the previous guests’ dishes still on them. There was no food, just leftovers. The woman brought food after about 20-25 minutes, but the tables were still dirty. The receptionist acted as if she were on drugs. The price for the room was twice what we’d agreed on four days earlier. We only stayed because we had children with us and it was already late. I’d recommend this hotel only to people with strong nerves.

The building is old, and the shower stall in our room was so narrow you couldn’t even wash your feet. The bed had a box spring mattress that was probably 50 years old, and we got no sleep. By morning, when we asked to change rooms, we’d already had a sleepless night and our stay was practically ruined. The evening receptionist at Hotel il Sole in Massa Marittima was outrageously rude. They also used one of our personal data for invasive purposes. We immediately told the manager and property owner, who hopefully resolved the issue. That receptionist was the icing on the cake. “Not recommended” sums it up; a complaint would be warranted.
