Hotel Del Campo

Breakfast had a good range of quality options, more than I’ve seen at other hotels in Italy, even if it wasn’t huge. The pool was spotless too. We paid 120 euros for a double room in this old hotel, which has been renovated really well, and our room was perfectly clean. I’d definitely recommend it.

The grounds and garden were lovely, and the staff were friendly enough, but there wasn’t much within walking distance. If you’re going to the old town, I’d stay closer to it. Our room was clean, though freezing when we arrived. We were told the heating wouldn’t come on until 6:15, with one master switch controlling it. Breakfast was served on a lazy Susan: the pastries were a nice selection, but the eggs and bacon were cold, and there was no setup to keep the food warm. I wouldn’t stay here again.

We were glad to have a hire car, since the hotel is a little way from Matera’s old town. We found plenty of parking just outside the centre and could walk in from there. The hotel was quiet, our room was very spacious, and breakfast had a good variety. The outdoor pool was the best part after a hot day of sightseeing, a great way to cool off.

The shower was the weakest part of the room. It was quite limited and splashed water over the edge of the tub, as the picture shows. Some people in our group also couldn’t adjust the thermostat because it locked them out. We stayed one night on our Globus tour. The staff were professional and helpful, but the quality felt lacking. Dinner on the first night, pasta, turkey, dessert and wine, was tasteless, and others seemed to feel the same. At breakfast, the eggs were cold and served around the table. When we went back for warm ones, we were told that was all they had. They should have made more. You even had to ask for a croissant to be brought to your table. Overall, it was pretty meh.
