Hotel Cave del Sole

The hotel is smart and comfortable, with a superb room, an excellent breakfast, and helpful staff throughout. It's a little outside the center, so having a car was essential for getting to the old historic district of Sassi. Parking at the hotel was free.

A practical, pleasant hotel that covered everything we needed for two nights exploring Matera. Our room for three had a bedroom and a sofa bed in the sitting area; both were comfortable. It was simple, bright, and clean, with a kettle, and reception kindly brought us milk. Breakfast was fine, and the staff were friendly and helpful. There are about 10 parking spaces in the courtyard outside, plus an underground garage that looked tight. The courtyard opens onto a fairly busy road, so be careful pulling out. You'll really want a car, since Matera is a 10 minute drive. We tried a nearby restaurant the hotel recommended, about five minutes away. It wasn't pretty, but the pizza was good. Matera is definitely worth adding to a Puglia visit. We spent a full day there and managed to see most of it. The hotel wasn't a wow, but it was very nice and ticked all the boxes.

This was my second stay, and the hotel has never disappointed me. The rooms are modern and clean, breakfast is excellent, and the staff are polite and helpful. Special thanks to Pietro at reception, who's always there when you need help.

We didn't have any major problems, but for what we paid, it wasn't worth it. Our junior suite was large, yet there wasn't even a sofa or armchair, and the bedroom was up narrow stairs on a mezzanine. Noise carried badly into the room: breakfast conversations and plates being moved were clear, as were trucks and motorcycles outside, even though we faced the garden. The elevator was so loud we thought it might break down. The price just wasn't justified.
