Palazzo Gattini Luxury Hotel

The rooftop terrace has a spectacular view, and the spa is just as impressive. It felt like an ideal retreat for couples, and the breakfast was perfect. The staff were very kind, and it was a big plus that they could speak English when needed. Writing this from our bed before we leave, and feeling grateful for a lovely stay.

Make sure you get confirmation that your room faces the valley and has sunlight. The so-called “junior suites” facing the cathedral are dark and gloomy, and I don’t think they’re worth the price. The staff said that “all rooms are different” in this boutique hotel, which was obvious enough. Our traveling companions had a “junior suite” with a view, daylight, sunrise and sunset, a terrace, and a plunge pool. The room we were given felt used. The staff were service-minded, but their attempts to be friendly became silly. No thanks, that was unnecessary.

I left feeling disappointed and mistrustful. A five-star hotel should make guests feel welcome, not tricked. When the bill came, it already had a 15% “optional” service charge printed on it, as if it were compulsory. The waitress smiled and said it was optional and she could redo the bill without it, as though this little performance were normal. It felt like pressure, and I nearly went along with it just to avoid an awkward moment. That isn't hospitality; it’s manipulation. This is Italy, not the US. Tips are voluntary, and pretending to offer a choice after putting the charge on the bill is rude and insulting. For the first time, I refused to leave any tip, not because I’m stingy, but because I won’t reward dishonest behavior. I hope other guests speak up so practices like this can stop.

A beautiful, sanctuary-like stay. I loved the spa, restaurant, and cleaning staff, as well as the shuttle to the garage. The location is across from the Duomo, right in the middle of the Sassi. Thank you!
