Hotel San Giorgio Matera

The apartment is right in the town centre, which is a great location. They provide breakfast items you can eat in your room, and there’s a kettle and coffee machine. We didn’t have a toaster, though, and one would be useful.

We had a lovely day at the San Giorgio Hotel and really enjoyed meeting Alessandra and her father. They were wonderful, arranged a dinner reservation for us, and gave us great directions for getting around.

The food left in the room was a highlight for me. There was local meat and cheese, fresh fruit, bread, juice, water, yogurt, and gluten free products on request. I sometimes struggled to find things I could eat when dining out, so having all that available meant a lot. The bed was really comfortable, and we slept better here than anywhere else on our Italy trip. We loved our 3-night stay at Hotel San Georgio. It’s in a quiet, safe area, and reception was kind and very helpful. We’d definitely stay again.

The staff were welcoming and helped carry our heavy luggage to the rooms. They also gave us useful advice for getting back to Bari, which was a little confusing. There’s a bus stop right outside, with the #5 bus taking about 5 mins to Matera centrale. Tickets cost 1.5 € and can be bought on board, and the bus runs every 20 mins. Our room was quiet, clean, and comfortable, and we slept great. The beautiful sassi setting made every room feel unique. Coffee was well covered, with moka pots and a Nespresso machine with lots of options, including orzo espresso. There was also a huge spread of fruit, cheese, cereal, cookies, pastries, and pane of Matera, plus plenty of yogurt, milk, water, and juice. It was a dream of a hotel. I wish we could’ve stayed a whole week instead of one night.
