Right beside San Giorgio in Modica, Hortus has a peaceful little secret garden. It’s a luxurious Mediterranean residence from the 16th century. Highly recommended!

The multi-level terrace was so inviting that we barely wanted to leave it to explore Modica below. Inside, the 16th-century villa is spacious and incredibly comfortable, with a modern, well-stocked kitchen, quality linens, and plenty of hot water for all three bathrooms. It was restored in 2013 and updated for the 21st century, though you’d never guess what lies behind the unassuming gate on the narrow lane behind Modica’s cathedral. Lorenzo met us at our rental car, parked several blocks and staircases away because parking is very limited and not nearby, and helped with our luggage. He explained the property clearly and answered our questions throughout the stay. One of the finest places I’ve stayed anywhere. Just be ready for Modica’s many stairs!

The garden unfolds across several levels and feels like a dream. I’d recommend booking a treatment there with Luisa, who has magic hands and can melt away any tension. The house itself is an architectural gem, with impeccable style and thoughtful details, from the round, very comfortable bed to the lovely metal spiral staircase and impressive wine cellar. We felt completely at home at Residenza Hortus, a hidden paradise in the heart of Modica, next to the Cathedral of San Giorgio and near beautiful squares, charming wine bars, and excellent restaurants. A wonderful place where the soul of Sicily seems to live.
