We came across Chiesa San Pietro in Modica on a Sunday during what looked like a major local event. The church was packed, with national TV (RAI), senior police chiefs, politicians, and a very chic, well-dressed congregation. Seeing all that brought a lively contrast to the quiet stone streets and gave us a sense of Modica's cultural and spiritual life. The church itself is a beautiful piece of Baroque architecture. Sunlight made the façade look stunning, and the monumental staircase up to the entrance, lined with statues of the twelve Apostles, was especially striking. Inside, there are ornate details, marble altars, and intricate stucco work that give it the grand feel you'd expect of a Sicilian Duomo. Even without an event, it's worth seeing for its history and architecture. We felt lucky to catch a local celebration, and would recommend a visit, especially if one is happening.
