The location is the only thing Casa di Alice has going for it, in my view. Both bedrooms feel like closets, with low arched stone ceilings that are easy to hit your head on. The shower is about 30 inches square, barely enough space to turn around. Furnishings are sparse, just one old couch in the living room, no bedside tables and nowhere to put clothes. The kitchen and bathrooms aren't properly equipped either, so you have to buy everything yourself.

The room was clean and functional, but there was only one chair, and the Wi-Fi that came with the stay didn't work. After two weeks of travelling around Puglia, this was by far the most uncomfortable bed we'd slept in. Getting there was very difficult and there was no parking. The host tried to be helpful, though the problems showed up straight away and seemed to be glossed over. It would have helped to get information about good restaurants, laundry and the information centre, instead of a list of places with Google or WhatsApp buttons to direct you. I'm not sure what other guests liked about it. Their expectations for a comfortable, good-quality place must be different from mine.

Andrea's B&B is in the heart of Centro Storico, looking out over the Port, and my family stayed there when we came to Monopoli for my son's wedding. It's a bright, airy, very clean place, and all the amenities were perfect. Breakfast at the bar across from the B&B was great. Andrea is a real gentleman and was happy to help with local advice. Nothing was too much trouble. We loved the place and Monopoli, and we'll be back. Grazie Andrea di tutto.

The breakfast was basic, just one coffee, one croissant and a small bottle of juice. Anything extra costs more. The room was above a restaurant, so it was noisy until at least midnight, then the rubbish collection woke things up again at 6:00 am every day. There was no car access. The room had just one half-round window that couldn't be opened more than 20 cm, no view, little daylight and no bathroom window. Without the air conditioning there'd be no air. The photos on Booking don't show what the room really looks like. I would never have booked a cave room like this for 130 Euros a night.
