Niccolo told us about the castle’s secret passageways and its long history. Staying in a place this old felt really special. I loved the pink hallway walls and the worn, dimpled steps, shaped by centuries of footsteps. The morning view over the peaceful landscape was lovely, too. And Caspar the dog is so sweet, gentle, and friendly that I fell for him completely. Such a cosy, homey castle. Thank you, Niccolo!
We came in early October and, since it was out of season, the village felt completely deserted. The place seems a little neglected, with only a few old castle walls still standing. The apartment is plain, and I can imagine it working better for a summer visit, especially with a room looking out over the valley.
Niccolò was a charming host who knows the area well and gave us great ideas for places to visit. He also listened to our small suggestions, which helped make the stay more memorable. We were there over Ferragosto and had a wonderful time in this magical, enchanting place. We’d highly recommend it.
Castello Montelifrè has been in the same family for more than seven centuries, and the historic residence sits among the Sienese hills between the Val d'Orcia and the Crete Senesi, within the municipality of Montalcino. It makes a good base for exploring the Val d'Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The rooms have period furnishings, private bathrooms, and free Wi-Fi. Breakfast, available on request, includes croissants, jam, and hot drinks. The nearest bus stop is 300 meters away, with links to Sinalunga. San Giovanni d'Asso is a 10-minute drive, and Montepulciano is 25 km away.
I was on my pilgrimage when I stayed there. It gave me a chance to rest and get over my fatigue.
